Auto Insurance
About Auto Insurance
Motor/Auto insurance is a type of insurance policy that provides financial protection for vehicle owners in the event of an accident, theft, or other covered loss. The coverage can vary depending on the policy and includes Private Vehicles, Commercial and Passenger Service Vehicles (PSV).
What Risk is Covered?
- Liability coverage: This covers the cost of damages or injuries that you cause to others in a car accident.
- Collision coverage: This covers the cost of repairs or replacement of your car in the event of an accident.
- Comprehensive coverage: This covers the cost of damages to your car from non-collision incidents such as theft, fire, or weather damage.
- Personal injury protection (PIP) or medical payments coverage: This covers the cost of medical expenses for you and your passengers in the event of an accident.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: This covers the cost of damages or injuries if you're in an accident with someone who doesn't have insurance or doesn't have enough insurance.
In addition to these basic coverages, there are also optional coverages available, such as roadside assistance, rental car reimbursement, political violence and terrorism and excess protector insurance. The cost of car insurance depends on various factors, such as the make and model of your car, your driving history, your age and location, and the coverage you choose.
Comprehensive Cover
Comprehensive auto insurance provides financial protection for damages to your vehicle from non-collision incidents. This coverage can include a wide range of incidents, including:
- Theft: If your car is stolen, comprehensive insurance will cover the cost of replacing it.
- Fire: If your car is damaged or destroyed by fire, comprehensive insurance will cover the cost of repairs or replacement.
- Natural disasters: If your car is damaged by a natural disaster, such as a hurricane, tornado, or earthquake, comprehensive insurance will cover the cost of repairs or replacement.
- Vandalism: If your car is damaged by vandalism, comprehensive insurance will cover the cost of repairs.
- Animal collisions: If your car is damaged in an accident with an animal, comprehensive insurance will cover the cost of repairs.
- Falling objects: If your car is damaged by a falling object, such as a tree branch, comprehensive insurance will cover the cost of repairs.
- Weather-related incidents: If your car is damaged by weather-related incidents, such as hail, snow, or ice, comprehensive insurance will cover the cost of repairs.
Third Party Cover
Third-party car insurance provides financial protection for damages or injuries that you cause to others in a car accident. This coverage is mandatory in many countries, including Kenya. It covers:
1. Liability coverage: This covers the cost of damages or injuries that you cause to others in a car accident, including property damage, medical expenses, and other related costs.
2. Personal injury coverage: This covers the cost of medical expenses for the other driver and passengers in the event of an accident.
3. Legal defense coverage: This covers the cost of legal representation if you're sued as a result of an accident.
It's important to note that third-party insurance does not cover damages to your own vehicle or any medical expenses for yourself or your passengers in the event of an accident.
Third-party insurance is generally less expensive than comprehensive but it provides less coverage. If you're involved in a serious accident and are found to be at fault, the cost of damages and injuries to others can be substantial, and you may be personally responsible for paying those costs if you only have third-party insurance.
